Top 10 tips for budding new photographers and student photographers


  1. Take your camera everywhere! You never know what you will come across or who you will bump in to. News photos can be very big sellers, especially if you are the only one with the photos!
  2. Join some micro stock agencies like Shutterstock or Dreamstime It may be hard to initially join but keep at it, not only will you be earning from your photos for years to come it is a great way to improve on your own photography skills and work out what type of images sell well.
  3. Make connections with your local businesses, you may find by doing one job for free it will in the long run be very benificial if they like the quality and style of your work.
  4. Don't be affraid to take risks and try new things. Its great if you find something that is working well but always keep learning and building on your skills and techniques.
  5. Be prepared to do all the boring stuff like editing and keywording. This takes up more time than actually taking the photographs!
  6. Get yourself a decent website that is easy to use and navigate, this will be where most people first see your photographs so make surethey are your best work!
  7. By the best lens you can afford, the lenses make the most differance in the quality of your work
  8. Always shoot in raw, it enables you to post process pictures so much easier and is alot more forgiving if you have the wrong exposure or white balance
  9. Take as many photos as you can, it is the beauty of digital, just keep the best ones
  10. Be a perfectionist! Make sure you only show and sell your very best photos, bad photos will only damage your reputation.
